Summertime is the busiest time for tourism in Buenos Aires. It’s a great destination for sun lovers because the seasons are switched in the Southern Hemisphere making it an ideal escape from the cold winter in the North. Buenos Aires does get quite hot and humid though, especially in December and January, so we have some tips to enjoy Summer in Buenos Aires.
Find a pool!
Most modern apartment buildings in the city have large swimming pools, but as a visitor you should make sure to choose a hotel with a nice outdoor area, preferably with a pool. Our top choice is the pool area of the Home Hotel in Palermo Hollywood. Their lush garden behind the pool is perfect for sunbathing as well as a morning and evening dip to cool off. As an added bonus they have outstanding cocktails poolside. They also offer day passes to the pool if you’re not a guest.
Lunch indoors, dinner al fresco
Many days in December and January reach a high over 40 °C (105 °F), so unless you thrive in the heat, it’s best to seek shade or air conditioning in the afternoon. Like in Italy or Spain, Porteños eats dinner very late, often starting at 10 pm or later, making outdoor dining a perfect choice in the summer. Many restaurants have stunning terraces or patios perfect for a long dinner under the stars.
Take a break for a coffee or glass of wine
Buenos Aires is filled with wonderful cafes and wine bars ideal for taking a break from exploring the city. A top choice of ours is to go to one of our favorite wine bars in Palermo for a glass of cool Torrontes, the only native grape of Argentina. Top picks for outdoor wine tasting are Bar du Marche or M Salumeria.
Head indoors for some culture
Buenos Aires has thousands of cultural spaces, from art museums like the MALBA, to the theatre district on Corrientes Avenue, to musical performances at the Colón Theatre and Usina del Arte. The number of events are endless and often at no cost. The city has a comprehensive listing on their Culture website.
